Blaze threatens grow operation

FIREFIGHTERS not only put out a fire at a house in the Maples on Friday, they also saved a marijuana grow operation from going up in smoke.

Winnipeg police said on Saturday that firefighters rushed to the first 100 block of Leamen Crescent at about 1:30 p.m., but while battling the blaze they discovered the grow operation.

Police said they found 878 marijuana plants worth a street value of more than $972,000, as well as grow equipment worth $15,000.

Police said hydro and water services were being bypassed at the house.

There were no injuries and no one has been arrested.

Both the police department's Green Team and arson strike force are investigating.
