A man whose body was found lying outside a house on Simcoe Street early Sunday morning has been identified as Walter Madonick.

Police were called to the 600 block of Simcoe Street around 4 a.m. Sunday after a passerby phoned 911 to report a man lying on the ground in front of a home.

Winnipeg Police Service Const. Jason Michalyshen said emergency crews responded and Madonick, 55, was transported to hospital in critical condition, where he was later pronounced dead.

Michalyshen said Sunday that police have declared the incident a homicide due to the condition in which the man was found. They are not releasing further information about the man's injuries until an autopsy confirms the cause of death.

The death is the third homicide in the city this year.

Several women in an apartment block on the street said the victim lived in the neighbourhood and "would not hurt a fly." They declined to elaborate, saying they are too upset to talk to news media about the incident.

Early Sunday, yellow police tape cordoned off a block of Simcoe street as officers collected evidence, including bits of clothing left on the lawn in front of a home.

Delores Dublin lives two houses down from where the man's body was found and said she did not hear any sounds of fighting on the street. Dublin said she stayed up late watching TV on Saturday and slept soundly until police knocked on her door around 4:30 a.m.

She said police told her husband a man was beaten.

Dublin said she has lived on the street since 1985 and the block is normally quiet. She said the incident does not scare her and she feels safe in her home.

Michalyshen said anyone with information about the incident should contact police at 986-6508 or Crime Stoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).
