Bogo's birthday benevolence

Little Abby's wish comes true

  • Print

HE might not have blown out the candles, but a Winnipeg Jets player still made a kid's birthday wish come true.

Abby Reid was recently celebrating her eighth birthday at the March 1 Jets game against the Florida Panthers and hoping one of her hometown heroes would flip her a puck.

In fact, Abby, who was seated with her parents in the second row, came armed with a sign saying it was her birthday and stood at the glass as several players were skating on the ice before the game.

Abby's mom, Brenda, said that's when Jets' defenceman Zach Bogosian stopped and made her daughter's day.

"He picked up the puck and goofed around with her pretending he couldn't toss it over the glass," she said.

"I would say that I hope everyone could see the smile that he put on her face, but many already have. They replayed that playful interaction during the televised game."

Brenda said Bogosian did flip her daughter a puck -- it's now in a treasured spot in a clear display box beside her bed -- and he did even more after the game.

"I tweeted Zach to let him know why his kindness meant even more to our family and he instantly retweeted the video of Abby's battle with Type 1 diabetes."

Brenda said that tweet has already led to several people donating funds to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Abby herself said "I felt happy" about getting the puck and she said she was thrilled to take the puck to school the next day.

"I showed it to all my friends."
