THE biggest voice in Bollywood has come to Winnipeg.
Sonu Nigam is a South Asian popstar who's been selling out venues across North America. Tonight, he's playing at the Centennial Concert Hall.
Local fans promoting the show say getting the playback singing celebrity to perform in our Prairie city is a coup for the local South Asian community.
In India, Bollywood playback singers enjoy the same status as popular actors and music directors. A playback singer's voice is prerecorded for use in movies where actors or actresses lip-sync the songs for cameras.
Nigam, who's been performing since the age of three, reached the pinnacle of his career singing for Bollywood.
Although a playback singer, in concert he always performs live with his band, according to an online fan forum that tracks his shows around the world.
"The grandeur of his shows is always impressive," Winnipegger Dost Mughal said.
Members of the local South Asian community know him well and hope his Winnipeg show at 6 p.m. will introduce him to new fans.
