Boy, 12, charged in killing of girl, 14

A 12-year-old boy is facing murder charges after allegedly stabbing a 14-year-old girl in Oxford House Monday morning.

Mounties were called in after Marilyn Munroe showed up injured at a nursing station. An autopsy conducted Tuesday confirmed she died from a stab wound, RCMP said.

The northern community of Oxford House is mourning the death of the 14-year-old girl.

"She was a good student and she loved being with her friends and singing," said her cousin, Willis Munroe, 16.

Willis Munroe said Marilyn, who was also known as Molly to her friends, had been at a party at a home in the community.

Willis said a wake is underway at Marilyn's home and is expected to last until the end of the week.

RCMP officers from the Winnipeg serious crime unit and the Thompson major crime unit flew into Oxford House to assist with the investigation.

Police are not releasing any other details at this time.

The boy is charged with second-degree murder. He will be appearing on Dec. 31 at the Thompson Provincial Youth Court.

Oxford House, formally known as Bunibonibee Cree Nation, is on the eastern shoreline of Oxford Lake at the mouth of the Hayes River, about 950 kilometres northeast of Winnipeg.
