City dissolves police advisory board, paving way for new commission

WINNIPEG — City council has voted to dissolve the Winnipeg Police Advisory Board to make way for a new police commission that will be created as soon as next year.

Mayor Sam Katz announced the creation of the police board during his State of the City address in 2007, but it will become redundant once the meatier police commission starts up.

The council vote was unanimous. St. Vital Coun. Gord Steeves, who sat on the police advisory board, praised the body for its work over the past two years.

He also warned that the new police commission may cost the city more money.
