Driving treacherous across southern Manitoba

Don’t even think of driving down south today.

The weather outside is so frightful that the I-29 highway from Pembina, N.D., all the way to South Dakota was closed this morning, said Manitoba Highways information clerk Katherine Moody.

The main artery that runs from Winnipeg to Grand Forks and Fargo closed at 8:30 a.m.

Blowing snow and icy roads have also made driving treacherous across Southern Manitoba, but no local highways are closed yet, Moody said Christmas morning.

"Slowing down is a good idea pretty much everywhere," she said.

Road crews are out on Manitoba Highways trying to keep them clear and sanded, but if the storm in the States heads this way, things could change.

"Looking at the radar... it looks like we may get part of it," Moody said.

For updates on road conditions, check Manitoba Highways.

Winnipeg could get up to 20 centimetres of snow by late Saturday, with winds gusting up to 60 kilometres an hour. Along the U.S. border all the way across Manitoba, conditions are even worse.

The temperature should stay in the single digits below zero, but wind chill makes it feel much colder.
