Duguid acclaimed as federal Grit candidate in Winnipeg South
WINNIPEG — Former city councillor Terry Duguid was acclaimed Wednesday night as the Liberal candidate for Winnipeg South in the next federal election.
The next election—one hasn’t been called, but speculation is it could be this fall—is Duguid’s third attempt for a seat in the House of Commons.
In 2004 and 2006 he ran for the Liberals in Kildonan-St. Paul and was defeated both times by Conservative Joy Smith.
He recently moved to Whyte Ridge with his wife and their two daughters. He will go up against Conservative MP Rod Bruinooge, who upset longtime Liberal MP and cabinet minister Reg Alcock in 2006.
Duguid was a Winnipeg city councillor from 1989 to 1995. He also ran unsuccessfully for both the Winnipeg mayor’s job and a seat in the legislature.
He is the former chair of the Manitoba Clean Environment Commission and recently left his job as the president and chief executive officer of the Winnipeg-based International Centre for Infectious Diseases to focus on campaigning.
