Holodomor painting has home at Legislature

WINNIPEG — A painting commemorating the Ukrainian Holodomor/Holocaust is now permanently on display in Manitoba's Legislative Building.

The acrylic-on-canvas work by Winnipeg artist Orysia Sinitowich-Gorski was officially unveiled today by Premier Greg Selinger. A number of local survivors of the 1932-33 Holocaust attended the ceremony.

"This moving portrait represents the Holodomor  — the Ukrainian Holocaust  — a dark period in human history," the Premier said.

"Ms. Sinitowich-Gorski has given us a stirring reminder of why we must always learn from the past. Her choice of a young child as the central figure in the painting symbolized the vulnerability of the human condition and the promise of a better future."

The government said it originally purchased the painting, titled Holodomor-Genocide #2, in 2008 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Holodomor when millions of Ukrainians died of starvation because of the actions of the Soviet Union's Joseph Stalin regime.
