Inner-city clinic gets boost from Tolkien Trust

WINNIPEG — An inner-city medical clinic will be able to fund holistic health initiatives over the next five years thanks to a donation from a charitable foundation set up in honour of the late author of the Lord of the Rings.

The Tolkien Trust will donate £60,000 (about $93,000 Cdn.) to the Winnipeg Interdisciplinary Student-Run Health (WISH) clinic, which operates out of Mount Carmel Clinic.

The clinic is an initiative that involves students and professional mentors from dentistry, medical rehabilitation, medicine, nursing and pharmacy to help students learn more about inner-city issues and social needs.

The Tolkien Trust was established by relatives of the late JRR Tolkien, Lord of the Rings author. The trustees include his son Christopher Tolkien, and Christopher's wife Baillie, daughter of local physician Dr. Alan Klass.

The trust has a long history with the University of Manitoba, and lent support to the undergraduate medical program by funding a review that led the faculty to support the WISH clinic.
