Manitoba spelling champion Ye-Young Won has been eliminated in the first round of the national spelling bee in Ottawa.

The Grade 6 student at Ecole J.B. Mitchell School incorrectly spelled the word 'cantata', spelling it 'contata'.

She was the third student to be eliminated from the field of 22, while 10 students spelled their word correctly before Ye-Young took her turn.

By winning the Winnipeg Free Press Regional Spelling Bee last month, Ye-Young qualified not only for the Canwest Canspell National Spelling Bee in Ottawa today and Friday, but also gets a spot in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., next month.
