New web tool links doctors, specialists
Manitoba’s doctors and the provincial government unveiled a new online tool today that speeds up medical care with a few clicks of a computer mouse.
Health Minister Theresa Oswald said the Catalogue of Specialized Services is a web-based service that links up family doctors to physicians who specialize in specific areas, such as orthopaedics or neurology.
Oswald said the service allows a family physician, after consulting with a patient, to quickly log on to the service to see which specialist is best-suited for their patient.
The service is intended to cut down on the number of wrong referrals and speed up the time a patient gets treatment for a particular ailment.
The idea, the first in the country, came from the Manitoba Medical Association about two years ago.
The software to put the idea into practice was made possible through $80,000 in funding from the province.
