A great horned owl that was injured on a Winnipeg schoolyard in September returned to the school Wednesday for its release back into the wild.

The owl, a male less than a year old, injured its wing when it became tangled in a soccer net while trying to catch a rabbit on the grounds of the Acadia School in Fort Garry in September.

Wildlife officials with Assiniboine Zoo cut the owl free and took him to be treated.

The raptor, dubbed "Score" after his net-related mishap, was nursed back to health at the Wildlife Haven Rehabilitation Centre.

His release was celebrated at the school when the prinicipal allowed the 600 students to watch the bird’s flight to freedom.
