WINNIPEG - Mayor Sam Katz and Premier Greg Selinger have worked out a compromise to ensure a police helicopter flies over Winnipeg this summer.

Last week, the province told the city it will not spend more than $1.3 million a year to pay for the operations of the helicopter. But the city wants the province to also cover the cost of future inflationary increases. Those would amount to $26,000 to $39,000 in 2011.

Speaking outside his office today, Katz told reporters he and Selinger have reached an agreement but did not elaborate.

A spokeswoman for the premier said the province is sticking to its guns and would only spend $1.3 million a year – but since the helicopter won’t be in the air all of 2010, the unused money from operations this year will be used to cover inflationary increases in 2011 and 2012.

The province plans to review the program and its funding after 2012.
