After years of waiting and repeated promises by the Doer government, motorists will finally be able to drive a little faster on some Manitoba highways this spring.
A government spokesman confirmed that the speed limit on some sections of the Trans-Canada and Highway 75 to the American border will increase to 110 km/h in the next several months.
The spokesperson refused to be any more specific.
Just before Christmas in 2007, the province made a formal application to the Highway Traffic Board to boost the speed limit to 110 km/h on sections of Highway 75 and sections of the Trans-Canada west of Winnipeg.
A year ago, the regulatory board gave the OK, and the province hoped to have the new limits in place by last summer.
The Trans-Canada east of Winnipeg will remain a 100 km/h zone in part because the Canadian Shield makes it more difficult to build a road that’s safe at high speeds. There are too many trees, boulders and other obstructions on the shoulder.
