A quartet of University of Manitoba doctoral students and a Gordon Bell High School grad attending the University of Toronto have received one of the most sought after scholarships for research.
U of M students Meika Richmond, Jennifer Juno, Kyle Elliott and Brent Else are four of only 166 students around the world to receive the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship. Also receiving the Vanier is Graeme Schwindt, a Gordon Bell grad attending the Univrsity of Toronto.
Regarded as Canada’s answer to the United Kingdom’s Rhodes Scholarship, the Vanier will pay out $50,000 for up to three years to each recipient.
"The government of Canada recognizes the vital role that research excellence plays in furthering innovation and competitiveness in addition to stimulating our economy," said Gary Goodyear, minister of state and science and technology. "The recipients of these scholarships are the world’s leading doctoral students and the next generation of researchers, professors and industry leaders who will make considerable economic and social contributions to Canada and beyond."
