Winnipeg aims for street-hockey record

WINNIPEG - "Car!"

The city is on pace to to be declared the Street Hockey Capital of the World.  Organizers have signed up more than 229 teams participating in CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada Presents Play On, surpassing the record set in Calgary in 2008.

Winnipeg is currently sitting at over 100 teams with two days to register.

"We hope to make Winnipeg the Street Hockey Capital of the World with this first tournament of the year, and raise the bar to an unbeatable level, as we are hockey crazy in this city and province," said Jeff Dzikowicz, the Winnipeg event director.

A total of 229 or more teams would require 1,500 players on 17-plus rinks during the event, to be held May 23 and May 24.

The winning team in the elite divisions will represent Winnipeg at the National Street Hockey Championship later this year.

The registration deadline is May 20 at midnight. A live registration even is being held on May 20, between 12 noon and 7 p.m. at Garbonzo’s at 1792. For further information, contact event director Jeff Dzikowicz at 981-8188. Also, www.playon.ca.
