Broken beaver dam leads to washout on Highway 10
ANOTHER northwestern Manitoba highway has been washed out, this time by a broken beaver dam.
Water, uprooted trees and rocks washed across Highway 10 about five kilometres south of Mafeking on Friday night. About a quarter of the paved highway, over a 50-metre stretch, was eaten away by water and debris as of early Saturday morning, according to an eyewitness.
Water rushing over the highway was a half-metre or more deep. One person returning to Mafeking in a new car-- it still had a permit sticker instead of license plates -- tried to cross and had to abandon his car when water pushed the front end onto the shoulder. As trees piled up against his car, he climbed onto the blade of a grader to get out.
Graders were on hand to clear trees and rocks off the road. It's not known what happened to the vehicle, a white Crown Victoria.
Darryl McIvor was held up from about 6:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Then he decided the water flow had subsided enough for him to cross the highway in his pickup truck. Otherwise, it would have meant an extra four-hour detour for him to return home to the town of Cross Lake. He made it across. However, McIvor didn't get home until 6:30 a.m.
Two months ago, a section of Highway 83 collapsed south of Roblin, near the junction with Highway 366. This weekend's damage is not as severe.
The section of Highway 10 opened to traffic on Saturday but only a single lane. Flag personnel from Manitoba Highway were on hand to direct traffic, the department said. Mafeking is about 550 kilomtres northwest of Winnipeg.
As of Saturday afternoon, Highway 10 was the only highway experiencing problems because of excess rainfall. A department official was surprised there hadn't been more highway problems reported.
