'Busy' summer expected
Top cop won't 'discount' city turf war
AFTER a busy weekend of shootings, the city's police chief said Winnipeggers should brace for a busier summer.
Police responded to four shootings in the North End this weekend, including a fatal shooting outside 591 Manitoba Ave. Saturday night.
Sources said at least some of the shootings are due to gangs fighting over turf.
Police spokeswoman Const. Jackie Chaput said the fatal shooting of Wayne Roger Michelle, 28, on Saturday at about 11 p.m. was gang-related, as was another shooting at a Redwood Avenue home at about 1 a.m. Saturday.
"It's a situation where we're trying to do our best," said Winnipeg Police Service Chief Keith McCaskill.
"It's been very busy, it culminated over the week, and it will get even busier."
McCaskill said earlier this year 17 additional officers were being reassigned to the North End this summer to help with calls for service this summer, which statistics show is traditionally a busier time for police.
He did not confirm reports of a North End turf war Monday.
"I wouldn't discount it," he said. "There's certainly situations where members of a certain gang have been victims, in this case, so sometimes when that happens, you're going to get retaliation. And I know there's been a lot of talk about that."
However, he said officers from the street crimes unit, the homicide unit and the organized crime unit were deployed to the North End this weekend to help out. According to statistics obtained by the Free Press on the number of monthly calls where police are dispatched, the peak months are June, July and August.
In 2008, the most calls were in August. In July 2007, the peak month for that year, police were dispatched to 13,994 calls.
In the peak month of 2006, June, police were dispatched to 14,260 calls.
McCaskill said officers must work with the North End community to help reduce crime.
"I can certainly understand the concern of residents when shots are fired," he said, referring also to gang activity. "We don't have a simple solution but we're going to try our best to alleviate some of that."
