Be kids again

This Valentine's Day, single or not, why not embrace the kid in you and have a full museum day like you used to when you were a kid?

Right now the Manitoba Museum is featuring Dinosaurs Unearthed, which includes animatronic dinosaurs, skeletons, fossils, and more. Of course, all the old favourite exhibits are still there, too, and they never get old. Have fun exploring the Nonsuch and cuddle up in the silent movie theatre.

While you're at it, check out a show at the Planetarium and have some science-y fun in the Science Gallery.

Get cosy in the cold

I'm starting to have intense, frequent cravings for frozen maple syrup on a stick. It must be Festival du Voyageur time. The annual festival runs from February 15 - 24 this year. Take your special someone to Voyageur Park (866 St. Joseph Street) and enjoy entertainment tailored for romance. Grab some authentic French-Canadian food, enjoy a variety of great bands, get some souvenirs, enjoy the snow sculptures, and go on a sleigh ride. Once you're both tuckered out, get cosy and warm up by one of the many fires.

Open some doors

Plays are a great Valentine's Day date -- and you can always go out afterwards for some cosy conversation about what you just saw.

The University of Winnipeg offers student plays throughout the year, and this week the Acting 3: Honours Class is presenting Seven Doors, a mixture of comedy and tragedy with some musical numbers thrown in for good measure. Shows run nightly from Tuesday to Friday at 8 p.m., and Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Asper Centre for Theatre and Film. Visit theatre.uwinnipeg.ca to make a reservation.

Tell a (tea) story

Waffles and tea are perfect Valentine's Day foods. They make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. If you're in a relationship, they're perfect for making any date feel a little cosier.

Tea Story (222 Osborne Street) does waffles and tea like no one else. The waffles are light and fluffy, and come in both savoury sandwich and dessert style. The teas come in a ton of flavours, and the decor is bright and modern. For Valentine's Day especially, see if you can grab the bright red couch shaped like a pair of lips.

Get spun right right 'round, baby

SPIN Restaurant and Martini Bar, located at 720 Corydon Avenue, is just one of those places: try to go there and not feel fancy. Just try. Once I went in jeans and when I left I was wearing a little black cocktail dress.

OK, not really, but SPIN is a really nice place with really nice prices. It offers a large selection of martinis and a delicious menu in a cool, modern atmosphere without the cool, modern price -- which makes it a great place for Valentine's date.

Run amok

"Seven women decide that making art is more fun than making dinner." So states the first line of the description for the Cre8ery's newest exhibition, Domestic Goddesses Run Amok. The exhibition features work from seven different female artists, and the work ranges from abstract to landscape. If you're not sure what your special someone likes, there's bound to be a style and medium to be found here. It kicks off, conveniently, with an opening reception February 14 at 7:00 pm at the Cre8ery (125 Adelaide Street).

Get music and the food of love

Sometimes classics are classics for a reason. Valentine's Day? Dinner and a show and you can't go wrong. If the show includes Romeo and Juliet, you're golden. Saturday, February 16, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra is offering Dinner and a Symphony. This Saturday you can enjoy a Russian-themed dinner on the Piano Nobile level of the concert hall and then watch Cheng Plays Mozart, which combines Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 25 in C major with selections from Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet ballet score.

Doors open at 5 p.m., with dinner and concert to follow.
