Cabbie escapes knife-wielding man

A Winnipeg taxi driver was forced to wave down police for help after a fare allegedly threatened him with a knife.

Winnipeg police spokeswoman Const. Natalie Aitken said on Saturday that after the 35-year-old cabbie picked up a man at Pembina Highway and Grant Avenue on Friday just after 10 p.m., the man pulled out a large knife hidden in a case of beer and threatened to harm him unless he drove him to a certain place in the city.

Aitken said when the cab got to Pembina Highway and Dalhousie Drive the cabbie flagged down police and the man was arrested. There were no injuries.

"It was a very scary incident for this individual," she said.

Aitken said she didn't know if the cabbie had activated the vehicle's rooftop flashing distress light.

Thomas Wilfred Taylor, 36, of Winnipeg has been charged with uttering threats, possessing a dangerous weapon and possessing marijuana for drug trafficking. He is being held at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.
