Camp Hughes named national historic site

A former military training camp in Manitoba has been named a national historic site.

On Tuesday, Environment Minister Peter Kent designated 10 new national historic sites, including Camp Hughes.

It was designated a provincial heritage site in 1994. A provincial website says Camp Hughes was established as Sewell Camp in 1909 and was renamed after then-defence minister Sir Sam Hughes in 1915. More than 38,000 Canadians trained on the site 10 km west of Carberry during the First World War.

There are nine other national historic sites in Manitoba, including Lower Fort Garry, The Forks and Riel House.
