THE Canada-U.S. border crossing at Gretna has been temporarily closed due to overland flooding from the Pembina River in the United States.
The closure affects traffic along Highway 30 in Manitoba and North Dakota's Highway 18.
In North Dakota, the Renwick Dam on the Tongue River, a tributary of the Pembina, is in danger of overtopping or failing. The city of Cavalier, N.D., has been placed under an evacuation order.
Some eastern tributaries of the Red River, such as the Roseau and Rat rivers, are still rising but expected to remain well within their banks, the province said Wednesday in its latest flood bulletin.
Manitoba Infrastructure and Transportation said heavy rains over the Victoria Day long weekend caused extensive farmland flooding in some parts of southern Manitoba. Some areas received more than 75 mm of precipitation.
