CBC replacing afternoon radio show host
CBC Manitoba has punted its afternoon radio show host.
Margaux Watt, who has been in the position for a decade, will do her last on-air shift July 9, regional director of radio and TV John Bertrand confirmed Wednesday afternoon.
"Margaux is a solid journalist," Bertrand said. "She's done a great job, but I know she has some other opportunities in the building she wants to explore."
Bertrand had no job for Watt to announce yet, but he said he wants her replacement in front of the microphone in September, when the important fall ratings period begins.
The corporation's union agreement means the position must be posted.
In a staff memo Friday morning, Bertrand cast the decision as Watt's, but sources inside the Portage Avenue plant say this is not the case.
They say her replacement, a visible-minority broadcaster, has already been tapped. But Bertrand insisted this was untrue and that the job will be posted as per union agreement.
Watt put a positive spin on things herself.
"It has been a dream job," she said by email. "I have some exciting, new opportunities to look forward to... I feel very fortunate."
In the spring BBM ratings, CBC Radio placed third overall, with an 11.2 share, behind CJOB and Hot 103.
The morning show, with hosts Terry MacLeod and Marcy Markusa, was No. 2 with a 14.5 share, Bertrand said.
CBC's afternoon show, named Up to Speed, was lower down the ranking with a 9.5 share.
