Charges follow attacks on police

FOUR men face charges of attacking police officers in West Kildonan early Saturday.

Winnipeg police said they went to Carsdale Drive and Swinford Way at about 1 a.m. after getting reports of shots fired and several people gathering.

Police said when they arrived, they had to disarm a man armed with a hammer. While arresting a 19-year-old man, another 19-year-old man began pushing officers, another 19-year-old grabbed an empty bottle and tried striking an officer, and a 20-year-old jumped in.

Two of the men tried fleeing the area, but they were nabbed through the efforts of Air1, the canine unit, the tactical support team and uniformed officers.

Three 19-year-old men and a 20-year-old man face charges of assaulting a police officer, while one of the teens and the 20-year-old man also face a charge of possessing a dangerous weapon.

All four men have been released on promises to appear in court.
