A three-year-old boy is lucky to be alive after falling out of a third-storey window on Saturday.

The boy suffered a broken leg and internal injuries after slipping through the screen in the window of a home at 693 Maryland St., at about 1:55 p.m.

A window with the screen partially buckled inward could be seen on the third floor. Winnipeg police spokeswoman Const. Jacqueline Chaput said officers are continuing to investigate, but believe the fall was accidental.

Chaput said the child was rushed to Children's Hospital in unstable condition, but he was later upgraded to serious condition.

Outside the apartment building, police officers put yellow tape around the entire north side of the building, which fronts onto a park at Maryland and Wellington Avenue.

Shortly after the ambulance left with the child, a tenant of the building could be seen showing officers the top of the nearby chain-link fence. Tenant Frank Iverson said he rushed from his main-floor suite when he heard "whining" outside.

"It was just a little boy," Iverson said.

"They had him on his back and they were trying to lift him. I said 'Don't move him. Keep him warm.' I thought he could have had internal bleeding."

Iverson said he didn't know if the child struck the fence before hitting the ground.

"His mother was out there crying. He was still breathing, but he didn't look good. It's a wonder he's not dead.

"It's a hell of a fall."
