City activist Nick Ternette undergoes leg amputations

WELL-known local activist Nick Ternette is recovering in hospital after having both his legs amputated last weekend.

A muscle infection forced doctors to amputate Ternette's right leg at the hip and his left leg below the knee. He is slated for another surgery today to close the wounds, but doctors believe they have stopped the infection from spreading, his wife Emily Ternette said.

Ternette, who is in his mid-60s, is known for being outspoken at city hall and for his frequent editorials and letters to the editor. He has been battling cancer and was taking chemotherapy treatments every three months.

Emily Ternette said her husband is in good spirits and will be back to his rabble-rousing ways once his physical recovery and rehabilitation is complete. "He's already called me twice today to give me my marching orders."
