City firm to pick up residential compost

THE city doesn't offer Winnipeggers a curbside compost pickup program, but a local company wants to step in to fill the void.

Samborski Garden Supplies is set to expand their composting program into residential neighbourhoods this summer, collecting kitchen scraps and yard waste from interested homeowners in a few parts of Winnipeg.

The company had been composting animal waste from the Assiniboine Park Zoo and Assiniboia Downs for years when they fully launched their composting project about a year ago, investing in a compost-collection truck that now collects waste from around 50 restaurants and other businesses.

The company hopes to begin picking up residential compost June 1 in a few neighbourhoods, based in part on proximity to its McGillivray Boulevard location. The goal is to start small and make sure everything runs smoothly, said owner Lenn Samborski. "Let's just see if Winnipeggers are ready to go this route," he said.

The group hasn't finalized pricing for residential customers, but Samborski said they'll likely focus on areas such as White Ridge, Linden Woods, Linden Ridge, Wolseley and parts of River Heights and Tuxedo, depending on interest.

Samborski Garden Supplies does its composting on site, where there are large compost piles in various states of decay.

Samborski said they've had a good response to the program in the past year, adding the company gets calls weekly from people interested in residential pickup.
