City, national gasoline prices jump up in unison
WINNIPEG and area gas stations joined their counterparts across Canada in raising prices at the pump Wednesday.
The posted price for regular gas rose a nickel Wednesday morning to $1.269 cents a litre at most city gas stations, according to winnipeggasprices.com, a consumer watchdog website.
The shock of higher gasoline prices across the country has been particularly acute in Montreal, where prices soared as much as 13 cents a litre. The price of regular in the Montreal area was just under $1.53 a litre.
Gasoline prices across southern and eastern Ontario rose about 3.4 cents a litre at midnight, said the tomorrowsgaspricestoday.com website. The price of regular in the Greater Toronto area was just under $1.37 a litre and $1.34 in the Ottawa area.
Gas-price watcher Dan McTeague said the price hike looks like just a money grab. His website calls the hike "absurd and unjustified."
Word of Wednesday morning's increase prompted many drivers in the Toronto area to fill up before midnight, causing long lineups at some service stations. It was the same in Montreal, only in that city, stations were already selling gas at from $1.37 to $1.43 a litre.
