Climate rally group loads bus for Ottawa

DOZENS of Winnipeggers boarded an Ottawa-bound bus Thursday to join a climate rally on Parliament Hill. They'll join 1,000 others from across the country for Power Shift Canada 2009, the largest ever gathering of environmentally conscious young people in Canada.

Manitoba participants range in age from 15 to 30 and represent the University of Manitoba, University of Winnipeg, Red River College, several Manitoba high schools, provincial environmental non-profits and young professionals in the workforce. Once in Ottawa, the participants will be involved in a weekend of environmental workshops, speakers and concerts, and the trip will culminate Monday with a massive lobby on Parliament Hill.

Following the rally, Power Shift plans to meet with MPs and senators.

"I am very optimistic we'll be able to overcome the climate crisis," said Dean Medeiros, a regional co-ordinator for Power Shift. "I think that the government, and the (politicians) we will be speaking with in particular, will be receptive to our needs."

The rally takes place ahead of the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, Dec. 7-18. Several countries will be represented at the conference, including a 25-person delegation from Canada.

Medeiros is also the project manager for Climate Change Connection, a Manitoban non-government organization, and will be part of the Canadian delegation.

"I am looking forward to the conference," said Medeiros. "We are looking for immediate and comprehensive change on climate change issues and we are going to Copenhagen to let them know what we expect."
