THE franchise owner of the Tim Hortons outlet on the Opaskwayak Cree Nation (OCN) is bringing in workers from the Philippines because he said he can't find reliable staff in the community.

Eric Sanderson said he was forced to close the 24-hour Tims Sunday night because staff didn't show up. "We find that a lot of these people have issues... they can't get transportation or they can't get babysitters."

Sanderson, a franchise owner for the last five years, said he takes student interns from the OCN schools and EI training recipients, adding however that most employees don't stick it out.

"I've talked to other fast-food owners here and they're having the same problems -- there just isn't enough people interested in the food-service industry," he said.

Sanderson said he's working with a federal government program to bring in five or six workers from the Philippines on a two-year contract. That deal hasn't been finalized, he said, but added he hopes to have the new staff in place for the summer.

Sanderson would not disclose how much he will pay them.

He said he's continuing to advertise for help locally, adding the starting wage is $10 an hour.

Sanderson's Tim Hortons outlet is located at the Otineka Mall on the OCN, located near The Pas.
