Commenters bringing down the House

Our readers really ate up news the city has terminated a leasing agreement with the Salisbury House on the Esplanade Riel.

My wife and I went about two times a year. I really enjoyed an afternoon meal in the spring, watching the ice flows roll by. Occasional docks, large trees, bergs with snowmobile tracks sometimes hitting the support. You could hear and feel the thud. Summertime, you watch the assortment of boats, from the small to the River Rouge. I'd rather see Sal's in there than nothing. It wasn't Sal's idea to build the bridge or restaurant.

The only thing that will work is a destination type of operation people are seeking out for a specific reason. They can go to loads of different restaurants like Sals (which I love) so why walk across a cold bridge to go to that one? Perhaps a new venue to allow bookings for light music shows, readings, book launches... Something that won't be used every day, but when it is used there is purpose to people going out of their way to get to.

If memory serves me correctly, the city had to go begging for someone to occupy that space and that is why the rent is so cheap. Now we are kicking out the business that saved us? Dumb.

Open a restaurant and name it the Castle Restaurant. Affiliate it with the CMHR, and the pair can become known as the "White Elephant and Castle."

Rent it to Tim Hortons. People would swim the Red River in the freezing cold for Timmies.

Maybe CoW can class it up even more by leasing the space to a dollar store chain.

Finally that greasy fast food joint will be gone! I can't wait! Every time I passed by there, I thought it was a shame with all the black taped-up windows in the front. You didn't even see if it was open or not. A place like that should be bright and illuminated with open windows with views to each direction and also to look inside. I sure hope something better will move in, representing a modern city with some style and real cuisine and not just fast food!

I suspect an inside deal is in the works and it is not coincidental Hu's recently closed. Salisbury House was the only remotely viable tenant last time, so this round of soliciting interest is a mere smoke-and-mirrors show.

Something along the lines of the "Shindico Grill" will be opening soon.

"On Saturday, it ran an advertisement in the Free Press inviting interested parties to submit written offers before 4 p.m. Jan. 31."

A tendering process, now that's a novel idea for the Katz cartel. Hopefully the winning bid doesn't turn out to be one of Sam's business partners.

We've been regulars there for years. Sunday breakfasts, late night dinners, the odd Saturday snack when visiting The Forks. Love the view and the walk. No matter the weather. Whatever else goes in there, we'll support it.

Not many other cities have this. We do. Get off your collective a....s, leave the suburbs for a change, and take a drive downtown.
