Conservationist to seek Tory nomination

NOTED conservationist and Winnipeg Free Press columnist Robert Sopuck has announced his intention to run in the next federal election in Dauphin-Swan River-Marquette.

Veteran MP Inky Mark announced in late June that he would retire when the next federal election rolls around.

Sopuck is the first individual to officially declare his intentions to stand for the Conservative Party of Canada nomination.

"I know and love every corner of this riding and believe I can be an effective champion and rural advocate," Sopuck, a longtime resident of the Sandy Bay area, stated in a news release.

Sopuck's career has included senior positions in both the public and private sectors with independent business activity focused on agriculture, forestry, fisheries, tourism and the environment.

Riding president Wayne Mathison confirmed he may run for the nomination.

Former Tory candidate Ken Waddell and Minnedosa MLA Leanne Rowat both said they won't seek the nomination.
