Conservative MLA announces she's quitting politics

THE Manitoba Tories are down to 18 MLAs.

Progressive Conservative MLA Mavis Taillieu pulled the plug on her decade-long career in provincial politics on Tuesday, citing in a statement a desire to focus on her health and well-being and to mentor her two adult sons as they form a new unspecified business venture. She is married to Wilf Taillieu of Taillieu Construction Ltd. in Headingley.

Tallieu was first elected MLA for Morris in 2003.

"I feel incredibly honoured to have been the MLA for the Morris constituency for nearly 10 years," she said in a statement.

"It has been an enriching and rewarding experience serving the people in the constituency and I am thankful for the support they have shown me."

Tailleau's departure, which leaves the Tory caucus with 18 MLAs, four of whom are women, had been in the works for several weeks.

"I know how challenging and difficult it can be, this life, for family and I wish her the best," Tory Opposition Leader Brian Pallister said.

"We lose a woman, but more importantly we lose a capable person."

Tailleau has been the critic for culture, heritage and tourism, family services and housing, immigration and multiculturalism, advanced education and literacy, and infrastructure and transportation. She has also served as the official opposition house leader and the caucus whip.

Pallister called on Premier Greg Selinger to call a by-election in Morris as soon as possible so the riding is represented when the legislature resumes sitting this spring.
