Craig Street's kitty needs filling fast

AFTER trying to arrange homes for strays and raise funds for the shelter through a special adoption day, a community cat shelter still doesn't have enough in the kitty.

"We had about $650 come in today," Lynne Scott, founder of Craig Street Cats, said Sunday evening.

But the group needs about $10,000, and fast.

Craig Street Cats needs to pay $5,000 in bills immediately and is expecting to be hit with another $5,000 in vet bills by the end of the month.

Paying up will prove difficult, especially since donations have slowed to a crawl over the summer.

The organization has only raised about $3,000 through donations over the last month -- well short of the $14,000 it raised in June.

"We're not talking closure or anything like that, but certainly if we're not able to keep our accounts current, the companies will put us back on a cash basis," Scott said.

That means companies that provide food and supplies will only allow the shelter to order what can be immediately paid for in cash.

"That's a difficult way to do business, especially for a shelter," Scott said.

The shelter is expecting a huge bill this month for treatment needed for a kitten tossed from a car between the towns of Piney and Sprague, and another that might lose its foot due to an abscess that went into the bone, Scott said.

Winnipeg's feral cat population is estimated to be between 50,000 and 100,000.
