Dam water responsible for closing river trail

THE entire Forks ice-skating trail is now closed for the year.

A release of water from the Shellmouth Dam has flooded the trail. The Shellmouth Dam reservoir is being drawn down as a flood-prevention measure.

A lower reservoir on the western side of the province will be able to accept more snowmelt this spring from the Assiniboine River.

"Right now, we're pulling all our warming huts back in," said Clare MacKay, The Forks' marketing manager.

The trail was open 66 days this year, slightly longer than normal.

There is still 1.2 kilometres of skating trails on The Forks site, as well as an Olympic-sized skating rink in front of the Scotia Bank stage and skating under the canopy.
