Damage estimate hits $5M in downtown blaze

A fire that tore through a small building behind Portage Place mall Tuesday afternoon caused $5 million in damage, fire officials say.

The fire broke out around 5 p.m. in an annex building sandwiched between two apartment buildings on The Promenade, the tiny cobblestone-like street immediately outside the north exit of the mall.

Early estimates had put the cost of damages from Tuesday afternoon's fire at around $1 million.

Shortly after midnight, residents of one of the apartment buildings attached to the annex were asked to leave their homes.

"We had 400 Webb Place totally evacuated last night because the emergency systems were inoperable due to water in the basement," said Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Platoon Chief Stephen Sumka.

Residents were allowed back home late Wednesday afternoon after the building's safety systems were reactivated, Sumka said.

A building spokesperson couldn't be reached for comment Wednesday evening.

Three people were treated in hospital for smoke inhalation.

The fire appears to have been caused by careless disposal of smoking material, such as a match or cigarette, police said.

The building housed several businesses on the main floor, including the University of Manitoba's Downtown Aboriginal Education Centre, a grocery store and a fashion store. The top floor contained several residential suites.
