Deer Lodge care meeting either 'productive' or 'a waste of time'
MONDAY night's meeting at Deer Lodge Centre to discuss the findings of a quality-of-care review went well -- or poorly -- depending on whom you talked to.
Officials from the Portage Avenue long-term care and rehabilitation facility had nothing but positive reviews of the 75-minute session.
"It was a productive meeting. The (patients') families gave us constructive feedback," said Kevin Scott, director of community and patient relations at Deer Lodge. "Things are getting better. We will meet regularly to give them progress reports on meeting recommendations."
But Maureen Anderson, whose complaints about poor care received by her husband, Chuck, who died at Deer Lodge in January, was disappointed.
"It was a waste of time," she said.
A second meeting to discuss the review is scheduled for 6 p.m. today. Scott said subsequent sessions will be held if families want them.
Mindy Lofchick, a friend of the Andersons, said the same concerns about patient care continue even though a host of changes were supposed to be implemented starting in February.
"(The meeting) was an attempt to quell the riot," she said. "You still see bedpans on people's food trays, the only two health-care aides on a shift go for smoke breaks at the same time and (patients) sometimes wait an hour for a response to their call."
Lofchick said at least Deer Lodge officials said to contact the nursing co-ordinator when response times are slow.
Scott said he didn't want to discuss specific initiatives before letting patients and families know about them, but they revolve around basic care needs, leadership and trust and respect.
