Doctor's sex-assault trial begins

A trial is underway for a Winnipeg doctor who allegedly sexually assaulted a teenage boy at Health Sciences Centre.

Walid Abdelhamid, 32, appeared in court Tuesday for the start of his three-week hearing.

Lawyers dealt with a legal matter before adjourning until this morning when the victim is expected to take the stand.

A court-ordered publication ban prevents the media from reporting some of the details of the case that could reveal the victim's identity.

Abdelhamid was released on bail following his 2009 arrest only to vanish. He was returned to Canada in May 2011 after being located by police in Greece.

He has remained in custody since then.

Abdelhamid was working at Health Sciences Centre when it was alleged he twice assaulted a teenage patient who was immobilized and high on morphine.
