Your weekend weather

Time is money, so let's cut right to the chase -- today is going to be a pretty decent day.

Fortunately, you don't have to take my word for it.

On Friday, just like I do every week, I called my buddy, Dale Marciski, at Environment Canada and interrogated him about the weekend weather.

"There'll be a high-pressure ridge over Manitoba Saturday bringing us sunshine," Dale beamed.

I was a bit confused. "I thought the sun brought us sunshine?" I grunted.

I could hear Dale's eyes rolling back in his head. "The ridge will help clear the skies, which will allow the sunshine through," he explained in the sort of soothing tone you'd use if you were talking to a household plant.

Dale also pointed out that, along with the sun, we'll see a high today of 17 C, which is a teeny bit above the normal high of 15 C at this time of year.

On Sunday, however, a few clouds start rolling in and the high dips to 14 C. "There's a low-pressure trough developing over Alberta and Saskatchewan, and that's going to push some clouds over us Sunday," Dale pointed out. "It'll push some rain our way on Monday and Tuesday."

If you were thinking of complaining, don't, because April is shaping up as above normal for both temperatures and precipitation. "Right now we've had 34 millimetres of precipitation and the normal for the month is 32," Dale noted.

If you can hang on until the end of the week, get your May pole out because we're looking at sunny skies and highs around 20 C starting Wednesday.

Speaking of baby animals (yes, I'm a master of the smooth transition), head to the Southdale Community Centre, 254 Lakewood Blvd., on Sunday from noon to 3 p.m. for the sixth annual Spring Babies Shower and Fundraiser in support of the Wildlife Haven Rehabilitation Centre.

You can go nose-to-beak with an owl, a hawk and a falcon. Admission is a silver collection, with all the cash going to help the hundreds of orphaned animals the wildlife centre receives every spring.

Afraid of baby animals? Visit the Ultimate Women's Show and the Ultimate Craft Show today and Sunday at Assiniboia Downs, with more than 120 exhibitors featuring health and wellness, fashion, jewelry and other ultimate stuff. I'm assuming regular women are allowed to attend.

Or pick up a masterpiece today and Sunday at the Charleswood Art Group's Springtide Art Show & Sale at St. Andrews River Heights United Church, 255 Oak St. Berets are optional.

Out of idle curiosity, I asked my weather expert pal Dale what he thought we should all do this weekend. "Today will be a great day for yardwork," Dale bubbled. "You can finish up what you haven't gotten done yet."

And that's when I hung up.
