Elphinstone pot bust results in two arrests

RCMP busted a marijuana grow operation Thursday in Elphinstone -- the second in five years in the western Manitoba community that has a population of about 50 people.

In the latest bust, Mounties arrested a couple in their 60s. In total, the raid removed an estimated $194,000 worth of drugs from the community.

Eight officers from the Elphinstone, Wasagaming, Shoal Lake and Hamiota detachments participated in the raid. They found 176 marijuana plants in various stages of growth. Police also seized $1,800 cash and hydroponic equipment that included lights and fans.

Two residents were arrested without incident at the scene. Roger Joseph Shatkosky, 68, and Nancy Diane Shatkosky, 62, have been charged with production of a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking.

Both were released from custody and will appear in Minnedosa court on Feb. 12.

Elphinstone is 45 kilometres northwest of Brandon.

Despite its size, RCMP say this isn't the first time that a grow operation has been found in the village. The last time was in 2007.
