Farmers combine their efforts

IT was a record harvest -- but not the kind most farmers hope for.

A total of 200 combines working on a single wheat field near Winkler set a Guinness World Record Saturday as part of the World Harvest for Kids 2010, a fundraiser for Children's Camps International.

"It was awesome," said Derek Unrau, regional director for the faith-based organization.

Unrau said it took just over 10 minutes for the fleet of combines to finish harvesting the 250-acre field, which had been swathed at end of day Thursday to prepare for the event.

A Guinness adjudicator, who later presented the group with a certificate confirming their record, scrutinized the proceedings from a fire truck boom 100 feet in the air, said Unrau.

"She gave us the wave, and everything was good," he said. "It was an exciting moment."

Children's Camps International helps send children in developing countries to camp. Unrau said the association will sell the harvested wheat and calculate total donations and merchandise sales from the event before tallying up the results of the fundraising efforts.

The organization's last wheat-field record was set with 100 combines in 2006. This time around they managed to beat a newer, 175-combine record set in Ireland.
