Fire destroys band office

OFFICIALS at the Poplar River First Nation are scrambling after a suspicious fire Wednesday morning destroyed the community's administrative building.

Chief Russell Lambert said temporary facilities are being set up for most of the band's departments.

"We're taking this one day at a time," Lambert said. "The building was insured for $3 million but we'll have to come up with new plans to rebuild."

RCMP said officers on the northern community were alerted to the fire at about 6 a.m. Wednesday. When members of the local volunteer fire department arrived, the two-storey building was totally engulfed and they were unable to save it.

RCMP said the cause is unknown but is considered suspicious.
