Fire erupts at collection centre for oil

THE fire at an oil-field collection point near the southwestern Manitoba town of Waskada that burned most of Thursday was finally put out in the late afternoon, RCMP said Thursday evening.

A Weyburn, Sask., company that specializes in such blazes was called in to help control the fire more than three hours from Winnipeg, police said.

A spokeswoman for Houston-based EOG Resources Canada Ltd., formally known as Enron Oil, said there were no injuries when the fire erupted about 10:40 a.m. Thursday at one of four collection tanks at the site three-kilometres north of Waskada.

RCMP cordoned off the area around the fire. No one was evacuated other than the five employees on-site. RCMP remained on scene all day. Flames could be seen from nearly a kilometre away.

The Manitoba Office of the Fire Commissioner was at the scene. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The company spokeswoman added that there were "no safety-related issues that would impact local residents."
