Fire speeds police renovations

In this case, a fire in a downtown building actually helped.

No one was injured when a small blaze was sparked by construction crews converting the former downtown Canada Post building on Graham Avenue into the new Winnipeg Police Service headquarters.

Acting district fire chief Ian Campbell said on Friday the fire, which broke out just before noon, ignited when insulation caught fire while crews were removing a section of the building on the fifth floor.

"There is no damage estimate because what caught fire was going to be demolished anyway," Campbell said at the scene.

"We just sped up the process."

Campbell said an aerial ladder truck was needed to put out the blaze because the building's water connection has been turned off during this stage of the renovation work.

Traffic was blocked for about 45 minutes on northbound Smith Street, reopening later in the afternoon.
