Fire wrecks garage, vehicles

A fire in the North End early Thursday morning badly damaged a house, destroyed a garage and burned two vehicles.

No one was injured in the blaze, which occurred at about 4 a.m. in the 400 block of Garlies Street, north of Mountain Avenue.

Firefighters said the blaze started in the garage and spread to the house. The fire also caused damage to neighbouring properties, including two garages.

"The flames were coming out of the garage and house. Whatever was close to them got damaged also," said one firefighter.

Firefighters had to cut a hole in the roof of the storey-and-a-half home to fight the fire, which had damaged the rear of the house. The fire also consumed a garage that contained two pickup trucks.

Officials did not immediately know the cause of the fire, and the investigation continues.

Initial damage estimates were about $200,000.
