Firefighters on roof want your donations

THE roof isn't on fire, but the firefighters are on the roof.

Four members of the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service are camping out on top of fire hall No. 4 in Osborne Village this week, in a city-wide effort to help raise funds for Muscular Dystrophy Canada.

The four brave souls -- T.J. Belluk, Joel Savard, Chad Swayze and Robert Campbell -- will participate in the challenge until Friday.

"The hall is open, so if people want to come by and drop off a donation, we'd very much appreciate it," Capt. Jim Hilash said last night, adding that all fire stations in Winnipeg are accepting donations.

The men will work the fundraiser 24 hours a day, with hourly interruptions for washroom breaks.

As for food, Hilash wasn't sure what the protocol would be, but did say that local restaurants have promised to keep the firefighters nourished. "I don't think they're going to starve up there, that's for sure," he laughed.

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service is looking to top the $60,000 mark set by the Edmonton Fire Department in a similar event last year.
