First female mayor for Brandon

  • Print

Shari Decter Hirst made history Wednesday night -- she's not only Brandon's next mayor, she's the very first woman to don the mayor's chain of office.

Decter Hirst garnered the support of 54 per cent of Brandonites (7,037 votes), trouncing two-term mayoral incumbent Dave Burgess who came in second with 43 per cent -- or 5,573 votes.

"We have achieved something historic... this campaign foreshadows what's going to happen in our community over the next four years," Decter Hirst said.

"Because of the faith and belief of the people of Brandon, we are going to have change in Brandon, this is fabulous."

When asked what's part of her first order of business, Decter Hirst admits, her list is lengthy.

"We have to hire a city manager, I have to get to know the council... we've got a very steep learning curve that we're going to have to deal with together," she said. "I'm just so excited to start looking at opportunities around smart jobs, talking to Renaissance Brandon about the revitalization of downtown and then it's lunchtime. It's going to be a great first four years."

Meanwhile, Dauphin has a new mayor.

Eric Irwin, a lawyer in Dauphin, beat former Conservative MP Inky Mark by less than 40 votes Wednesday night, although the tallies were considered unofficial.

Irwin had 1,289 votes while Mark had 1,253, according to Dauphin's CKDM Radio.

Dauphin's mayoral incumbent, Alex Paul, was a non-factor. He had 237 votes. He's was seeking re-election for the first time since his wife was murdered in their home in March 2007.
