Forum on OCD next week to boost awareness

THE OCD Centre in Manitoba is hosting a free public forum Wednesday, Oct. 10 at Health Sciences Centre to raise awareness about obsessive compulsive disorder.

Local medical experts have agreed to lead the public lecture, starting with a speech from keynote speaker Dr. Gary Altman and then a panel discussion with Drs. Mark Lander, Laine Torgrud and Jitender Sareen. It will be held at the Frederic Gaspard Theatre, Basic Sciences Building at 727 McDermot St., from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m..

The week of Oct. 8-14 is set aside annually to raise awareness and promote public understanding of the anxiety disorder that affects two to three per cent of the general population in Canada and the United States. In Winnipeg, it's estimated as many as 18,000 people could be living with compulsive, obsessive behaviours.

The disorder is best known for its ritualistic pattern of behaviours in which people replay a thought or a series of actions over and over again.

"People perform compulsions they feel they have to although they know the behaviours don't make sense," an OCD Centre statement said Friday.

Their days are disrupted and stopping themselves from their repeated behaviours may not be possible, the centre said in the statement.
