THEIR works almost span the passages of life: a young man training for the most gruelling race on the planet; an older man having knee surgery to walk again; a hearse stopped at a fast-food drive-through.
Those works by three Winnipeg Free Press photographers and a Free Press multimedia editor have been nominated for the country's top photojournalist awards.
Ruth Bonneville, Phil Hossack, Joe Bryksa and Melissa Tait are nominated for News Photographers Association of Canada (NPAC) awards this year.
Joe Bryksa snapped the photo of the hearse, a moment caught in time now nominated in the feature category.
Bonneville and Tait turned a straight-forward photo assignment into an on-location demonstration of Winnipegger Caelin White training for the World's Toughest Mudder Race 2012. Racers are put through a 24-hour muddy obstacle course that tests their strength and endurance. Bonneville kept up with White training in Birds Hill Provincial Park and in the Canadian Shield. Tait did a masterful job editing the raw footage to produce a top-notch video.
Phil Hossack travelled to Nicaragua with a team of doctors, nurses, and physiotherapists from Winnipeg's Concordia Hospital for the Operation Walk mission. In four days, the Winnipeg medical team performed 49 knee replacements. Hossack focused on one man in particular, Juan Canda, who suffered for 10 years with arthritic knees that forced him to stop working. Again, it was Tait who edited a video of the trip.
Bonneville, Hossack and Tait are nominated in the team multimedia category.
Winners will be announced at a gala event April 27, at the Gerry Thomas Gallery in Calgary.
